MS-DOS 3.31

This guide will show you how to install MS-DOS 3.31 in VirtualBox.

01 – Click New in VirtualBox

02 – Provide a name, and ensure that Type: Other and Version: DOS
Click Next

03 – Leave the RAM setting as is.
Click Next

04 – Make sure Create a virtual hard disk now is selected.
Click Create

05 – Make sure VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) is selected.
Click Next

06 – Make sure Dynamically allocated is selected
Click Next

07 – If required, change the location the virtual hard disk should be saved.
Click Create

08 – Select the newly created virtual machine and press Ctrl + S to open the machines settings. Select Storage in the left hand column, and then select Empty under Controller: Floppy.
Then click the small disk icon on the right hand side and click Choose Virtual Floppy Disk File.
Navigate to, and select the DOS 3.31 Disk Image.
Click Open

09 – Click OK to close the settings.

10 – Click Start

11 – DOS should boot
You will be asked to enter a new date.
You can ignore this and press enter.

12 – You will be asked to enter a new time.
You can ignore this and press enter.

13 – You should now be at the Command Prompt.

14 – Now we will prepare the Hard Disk for use.
Type “fdisk”
Press Enter

15 – Type “1” to select “Create DOS partition”
Press Enter

16 – Type “1” to select “Create Primary DOS partition”
Press Enter

17 – Type “Y” to confirm that you would like to use the maximum size for the partition.
Press Enter

18 – Type “Y” to continue.
Press Enter

19 – You will be informed that the system will now restart.
Press Any Key

20 – The system will restart.
You will be asked to set the date and time.
As before, Press Enter twice to confirm.
You will then be at the Command Prompt.

21 – Now the hard drive will need to be formatted.
Type “format c:”
Press Enter

22 – Confirm that you want to continue.
Type “Y”
Press Enter

23 – Begin the Format
Press Enter

24 – After a few seconds, the format will complete and you will be returned to the Command Prompt.

25 – Type “sys C:”
Press Enter

26 – Now to copy the DOS files to the hard drive.
Type “copy *.* c:”
Press Enter

27 – The files should copy successfully.
You will be returned to the Command Prompt.

28 – Click “Devices”
Click “Floppy Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Click “Machine”
Click “Reset”

29 – You will be asked to set the date and time.
As before, Press Enter twice to confirm.
You will then be at the Command Prompt.

MS-DOS 3.31 is now installed!
