MS-DOS 6.22

This guide will show you how to install MS-DOS 6.22 in VirtualBox.

01 – Click New in Virtual Box

02 – Provide a name, and ensure that Type: Other and Version: DOS
Click Next

03 – Leave the RAM setting as is.
Click Next

04 – Make sure Create a virtual hard disk now is selected.
Click Create

05 – Make sure VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) is selected.
Click Next

06 – Make sure Dynamically allocated is selected
Click Next

07 – If required, change the location the virtual hard disk should be saved.
Click Create

08 – Select the newly created virtual machine and press Ctrl + S to open the machines settings. Select Storage in the left hand column, and then select Empty under Controller: Floppy.
Then click the small disk icon on the right hand side and click Choose Virtual Floppy Disk File.
Navigate to, and select the first DOS 6.22 Disk Image.
Click Open

09 – Click OK to close the settings.

10 – Click Start

11 – DOS Setup should start
Press Enter

12 – Make sure Configure unallocated disk space (recommended). is selected
Press Enter

13 – You will be notified that setup will restart your computer.
Press Enter

14 – Setup will configure the hard disk and present you with a few options.
Change the Country and Keyboard Layout if required.
Make sure The settings are correct. is selected
Press Enter

15 – Setup will ask you where to install DOS.
Press Enter

16 – Installation will start.
After a couple of seconds, you will be asked to insert Setup Disk #2
Click Devices in the Toolbar
Click Floppy Drives
Click Choose disk image…

Select the second DOS 6.22 Disk Image
Click Open
Press Enter

17 – After a couple of seconds, you will be asked to insert Setup Disk #3

Click Devices in the Toolbar
Click Floppy Drives
Click Choose disk image…
Select the third DOS 6.22 Disk Image
Click Open
Press Enter

18 – Setup will complete and you will be asked to remove disks from all floppy disk drives.

Click Devices in the Toolbar
Click Floppy Drives
Click Remove disk from virtual drive
Press Enter

19 – Setup will inform you that MS-DOS 6.22 is now installed on your computer.
Press Enter
Your virtual machine will restart and DOS will load, taking you to the command prompt.

You have now Installed MS-DOS 6.22

 

**Optional**

**Installing CD Drive Drivers**
This will allow you to access CD Images mounted in your Virtual Machine in MS-DOS 6.22.

20 – Download the CD Driver Disk Image

21 – While booted to the command prompt in your virtual machine
Click Devices in the Toolbar

Click Floppy Drives
Click Choose disk image…
Select the CD Driver Disk Image
Click Open
Press Enter

22 – Type A: to change to the floppy drive.
Press Enter

23 – Type COPY AOATAPI.SYS C:
Press Enter

24 – Type C: to change to the hard drive
Press Enter

25 – Type EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT
Press Enter

26 – Navigate to the end of the file (Ctrl + End) and type
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:IDECD000
Save and Exit (Alt > F > X > Y)

27 – Type EDIT CONFIG.SYS
Press Enter

28 – Navigate to the end of the file (Ctrl + End) and type
DEVICE=C:\AOATAPI.SYS /D:IDECD000
Save and Exit (Alt > F > X > Y)

29 – Click Devices in the Toolbar
Click Floppy Drives
Click Remove disk from virtual drive
Press Enter

30 – Reboot the virtual machine (Ctrl + Del) and MS-DOS 6.22 should boot with CD support.
