17 – Windows 1.04 does not support PS/2 mice (which is what VirtualBox emulates). There are some guides you can find online where you copy the mouse drivers from Windows 2.x disks to the Windows 1.04 installation disk however this solution doesn’t always work (depending on the specific versions of Windows 1.x you are installing) so I have decided not to include this step.

Without a working mouse, navigation is controlled purely using the keyboard.

You can open options on the menu bar with Alt + F – You can then navigate left, right, up and down using the numbers on the Numpad. The same applies for navigating the file structure. For some reason (at least for me), the Arrow keys don’t work.

28 – Now we will make the necessary changes in order to have Windows 1.04 load automatically on boot.

Highlight NOTEPAD.EXE
Press Enter

29 – Enter “CD WINDOWS”
Enter “WIN”

30 – Press Alt + F
Highlight Save
Press Enter
Type “C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT”
Press Enter

31 – Press Alt + F
Press the Left Arrow (Numpad 4)
Highlight Close
Press Enter

32 – Windows 1.04 will now load automatically on boot.
You can Exit windows by pressing Alt + F, navigating to the “Special” menu, highlighting “End Session” and pressing Enter, Enter.
