Windows 10

This guide will show you how to install Windows 10 in VirtualBox.

01 – Click New in VirtualBox

02 – Provide a name, and ensure that Type: Microsoft Windows and Version: Windows 10 (64-bit)
Click Next

03 – Leave the RAM setting as is.
Click Next

04 – Make sure Create a virtual hard disk now is selected.
Click Create

05 – Make sure VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) is selected.
Click Next

06 – Make sure Dynamically allocated is selected
Click Next

07 – If required, change the location the virtual hard disk should be saved.
Click Create

08 – Select the newly created virtual machine and press Ctrl + S to open the machines settings.

Select Empty under Controller: IDE.
Then click the small disk icon on the right hand side and click Choose Virtual Optical Disk File.
Navigate to, and select the Windows 10 disk image.
Click Open

09 – Click “OK” to close the settings.

10 – Click Start

11 – Windows 10 Setup will load some files.
Windows 10 Setup will load.
Select your Language, Time/Currency format and Keyboard layout.
Click “Next”

12 – Click “Install now”

13 – Enter your Windows 10 Product Key. If you don’t have one, click “I don’t have a product key”
Click “Next”

14 – Select the version of Windows 10 you would like to install.
Click “Next”

15 – The License Terms will load.
Tick the “I accept the license terms” checkbox.
Click “Next”

15 – Windows 10 Setup will ask you whether you would like to Upgrade or do a Custom install.
Click “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)”

17 – Windows 10 Setup will list the Hard Drives found in the virtual machine.
It should only show the one.
Click “Next”

18 – Windows 10 Setup will begin copying and installing the necessary files.

19 – The virtual machine will restart a couple of times.
When told to “Press any key to boot from CD”, wait a few seconds.

20 – Windows 10 Setup will perform some operations will load. This may take a few minutes.

21 – The virtual machine will reboot.
When told to “Press any key to boot from CD”, wait a few seconds.

22 – Windows 10 will load.
You will be asked whether you would like to use Express settings, or Customise.
Click “User express settings”

23 – Windows 10 will perform some tasks.
You will be asked  whether you own the PC or whether it belongs to your work or school.
Click “I own it”
Click “Next”

24 – You will be asked to login to your Microsoft account.
Click “Skip this step”

25 – You will be asked to enter a User name and Password.
Enter a User name. You can leave the Password blank.
Click “Next”

26 – You will be asked to decide whether to use Cortana or not.
Click either “Use Cortana” or “Not now”

27 – Windows 10 will perform some tasks. This may take a few minutes.

28 – Windows 10 should finish loading.

Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Windows 10 is now installed.

Below are the steps needed to setup;

  • Hardware Drivers
  • Web Browser Installation

Hardware Drivers

VirtualBox comes with some optional drivers which can easily be installed.

1 – Boot into Windows 10

2 – Click “Devices”
Click “Insert Guest Additions CD image…”
The AutoPlay menu should appear.
Click “Select what happens with this disc.”
Click “Run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe”

3 – A User Account Control popup will appear.
Click “Yes”

4 – Virtual Box Guest Additions installer should launch.
Click “Next”

5 – Setup will ask for the destination to install to.
Click “Next”

6 – You will be asked to choose components to install.
Leave these as-is.
Click “Install”

7 – VirtualBox Guest Additions will start installing.

8 – A Windows Security popup will appear.
Click “Install”

9 – VirtualBox Guest Additions will finish.
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Make sure “Reboot now” is selected.
Click “Finish”

10 – The virtual machine will reboot and Windows 10 will load.
Right click on the Desktop
Click “Display settings”

11 – Scroll down
Click “Advanced display settings”

12 – Here you can change the resolution.
Change the resolution if you wish using the drop down menu.
Click “Apply”

13 – If you changed the resolution, you will be asked whether you want to keep the settings.
Click “Keep changes”

14 – The Display is now configured.

Web Browser Installation

I have included a number of different Web Browsers which you can install.

1 – Make sure you are in Windows 10

2 – Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Choose disk image…”

Select the Browsers disk image.
Click “Open”

3 – Install the browser(s) of your choice.

Once installed;
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”
