Windows 2.03

This guide will show you how to install Windows 2.03 in VirtualBox.

01 – Click New in VirtualBox

02 – Provide a name, and ensure that Type: Windows and Version: Windows 3.1
Click Next

03 – Leave the RAM setting as is.
Click Next

04 – Make sure Create a virtual hard disk now is selected.
Click Create

05 – Make sure VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) is selected.
Click Next

06 – Make sure Dynamically allocated is selected
Click Next

07 – If required, change the location the virtual hard disk should be saved.
Set the size to 500mb
Click Create

08 – You will need to install DOS 3.31 before continuing.

09 – You should now be at the Command Prompt.

10 – Click Devices in the Toolbar
Click Floppy Drives
Click Choose disk image…

Select the first Windows 2.03 Disk Image
Click Open
Press Enter

11 – Type “A:”
Press Enter

12 – Type “setup”
Press Enter

13 – Windows 2.03 Setup will launch.
Press Enter to continue

14 – Confirm where Windows should be installed.
Press Enter

15 – You will be asked to select a computer model.
Select “IBM Personal System/2 Model 25 or 30”
Press Enter

16 – You will be asked to select a graphics adapter.
Select “IBM (or 100% compatible) EGA (> 64K) with Enhanced Color Display”
Press Enter

17 – You will be asked to select your Keyboard layout.
Select your keyboard layout
Press Enter

18 – You will be asked to select your pointing device (Mouse)
Select “Microsoft Mouse connected to PS/2 Mouse Port”
Press Enter

19 – You will be shown an overview of your settings.
Select “No Change”
Press Enter

20 – Click Devices in the Toolbar
Click Floppy Drives
Click Choose disk image…

Select the second Windows 2.03 Disk Image
Click Open
Press Enter

21 – You will be asked whether you want to install a Printer.
Press “C” to continue and skip this step.

22 – You will be asked to select your country.
Select your country
Press Enter

23 – Click Devices in the Toolbar
Click Floppy Drives
Click Choose disk image…

Select the fourth Windows 2.03 Disk Image
Click Open
Press Enter

24 – Click Devices in the Toolbar
Click Floppy Drives
Click Choose disk image…

Select the fifth Windows 2.03 Disk Image
Click Open
Press Enter

25 – Setup will complete.
Press “F”

26 – You will be informed that Windows is now installed.
You will now be at the Command Prompt.

Click “Devices”
Click “Floppy Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

27 – Type “win”
Press Enter

28 – Installation is complete. You are now in Windows 2.03

29 – Now we will make the necessary changes in order to have Windows 2.03 load automatically on boot.

Launch NOTEPAD.EXE

30 – Enter “CD WINDOWS”
Enter “WIN”

31 – Click “File”
Click “Save”
Type “C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT”
Click “OK”

32 – Close Notepad (File, Exit)
Windows 1.04 will now load automatically on boot.
You can Exit windows by clicking “Special”, Clicking “End Session” and clicking “OK”
