Windows 95

This guide will show you how to install Windows 95 in VirtualBox.

01 – Click New in VirtualBox

02 – Provide a name, and ensure that Type: Microsoft Windows and Version: Windows 95
Click Next

03 – Leave the RAM setting as is.
Click Next

04 – Make sure Create a virtual hard disk now is selected.
Click Create

05 – Make sure VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) is selected.
Click Next

06 – Make sure Dynamically allocated is selected
Click Next

07 – If required, change the location the virtual hard disk should be saved.
Click Create

08 – Select the newly created virtual machine and press Ctrl + S to open the machines settings. Select System in the left hand column, and then select the Acceleration tab.
Uncheck “Enable VT-x/AMD-V”

09 – Select Storage in the left hand column, and then select Empty under Controller: IDE.
Then click the small disk icon on the right hand side and click Choose Virtual Optical Disk File.
Navigate to, and select the Windows 95 Disk Image.
Click Open

Note: Depending on the version of Windows 95 that you have, it may or may not be a bootable disk image in which case you will need to create a Boot Disk Image and use that in order to start setup.

10 – Select Network in the left hand column, and untick “Enable Network Adapter”.
An optional section at the end of this guide covers setting up the network but it’s more reliable to do so once Windows 95 has been fully installed.

11 – Click “OK” to close the settings.

12 – Click Start

13 – Windows 95 Setup should start
Press Enter

14 – Make sure “Configure unallocated disk space (recommended).” is selected
Press Enter

15 – Make sure “Yes, enable large disk support” is selected
Press Enter

16 – Setup will inform you that your computer will be restarted.
Press Enter

17 – Setup will format the hard disk and then restart the computer, informing you that Setup will perform a routine check on the system.
Press Enter

18 – Setup will perform the check and Windows 95 setup will launch.
Click Continue

19 – Setup will prepare and then display the Software License Agreement.
Click “Yes”

20 – The Windows 95 Setup Wizard will launch.
Click “Next”

21 – You will be asked to select the directory where Windows 95 should be installed.
Click “Next”

22 – You will be asked to select the kind of setup you would like.
Click “Next”

23 – Enter your Windows 95 Product Key
Click “Next”

24 – Enter the User Information
Click “Next”

25 – Leave “Network Adapter” Unchecked
Check “Sound, Midi, or Video Capture Card”
Click “Next”

26 – Windows Setup will analyze the system configuration and detect hardware.
This may take a minute or two.
On the following screen, make sure “Install the most common components (recommended)” is selected.
Click “Next”

27 – Setup will ask whether you would like to create a Startup Disk.
Select “No, I do not want a startup disk.”
Click “Next”

28 – Setup will inform you that it will start copying files.
Click “Next”

29 – Setup will install Windows 95.

30 – Setup will complete and inform you that the computer will be restarted.
Click “Finish”

31 – Setup will inform you that it has detected a disk in the floppy disk drive.
You can ignore this.
You do however need to unmount the Windows 95 Installation Disk.
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”
Click “OK”

32 – Windows 95 will load and search for Plug and Play devices.
Following that, Windows Setup will perform some final stages.

33 – The Date/Time Properties window will open.
Select your timezone.
Click “OK”

Note: If the correct timezone is already selected, click “Close”

34 – The Add Printer Wizard will open.
Click “Cancel”

35 – Setup will inform you that Setup has finished configuring your system.
A restart is required.
Click “OK”

36 – Windows 95 is now Installed.

Optional
Below are the steps needed to setup;

  • Network Installation
  • Display Installation
  • Service Pack Installation
  • Web Browser Installation

Network Installation

1 – Make sure that the Windows 95 Virtual Machine is shut down.

2 – Click Settings
Select the Network option in the left column.
Check the “Enable Network Adapter” option.
Click “OK”

3 – Click Start
Windows 95 will load.
It will detect the Network Adapter, and tell you that you need to provide Computer and Workgroup names.
Click “OK”

4 – Enter a Computer name, or leave as-is.
Enter “WORKGROUP” under Workgroup

5 – Click the “Configuration” Tab

6 – Click “Add”
Select “Protocol”
Click “Add”

7 – Select “Microsoft”
Select “TCP/IP”
Click “OK”

8 – Click “Close”

9 – You will be asked to insert Windows 95 Disk 1
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Choose disk image…”

Select the Windows 95 Disk Image
Click “Open”
Click “OK”

10 – You will be told that the file “netapi.dll” could not be found.
In the “Copy files from:” field, enter “D:\WIN95”
Click “OK”

11 – Windows will copy the necessary files and then prompt you to restart your computer.
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Click “Yes”

12 – Windows will load and present you with a login screen.
Enter a username.
You can leave the password blank.
Click “OK”

You will be asked to confirm your password.
Do so (or leave blank).
Click “OK”

13 – Once at the Windows 95 Desktop, open “The Internet”

14 – The Internet Connection Wizard will launch.
Click “Next”

15 – Select “Manual”
Click “Next”

16 – The Internet Setup Wizard will launch.
Click “Next”

17 – Select “Connect using my Local Area Network”
Click “Next”

18 – Select “No, I don’t want to use Windows Messaging”
Click “Next”

19 – Leave “Use Proxy Server” unchecked.
Click “Next”

20 – Click “Finish”

21 – Open “The Internet”
You can now browse the internet in Windows 95.

Display Installation

1 – Boot into Windows 95

2 – Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Choose disk image…”

Select the Display Driver image.
Click “Open”

3 – Right click “My Computer”
Click “Properties”
Select the “Device Manager” tab.

4 – Expand the “Display adapters” item.
Select “Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)”
Click “Properties”

5 – Select the “Driver” tab
Click “Update Driver…”

6 – The Update Device Driver Wizard will launch.
Select “Yes (Recommended)” is selected.
Click “Next”

7 – Update Device Driver Wizard will inform you that Windows was unable to locate an updated driver.
Click “Other Locations…”

8 – Click “Browse”

9 – Expand “Display (D:)”
Select “064mb”
Click “OK”

10 – Click “OK”

11 – Click “Finish”

12 – You will be asked to insert the Windows 9x VBEMP Driver Disk
Click “OK”

13 – You will be told that the file “vbe.vxd” could not be found.
In the “Copy files from:” field, enter “D:\064mb”
Click “OK”

14 – You will be told that you must restart your computer.
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Click “Yes”

15 – Log in to Windows 95
You should notice the wallpaper colour has changed.

Right click on the Desktop background
Click “Properties”

16 – Select the “Settings” tab.

17 – Here you can change the Colour depth and resolution.
Under “Color palette” Select “True Color (32 bit)”
You will find that the performance of a Windows Virtual Machine will be much improved when the operating system is running in a 32-bit colour depth.
Change the resolution if you wish.
Click “OK”

18 – You will be told that you have not specified a monitor.
Click “No”

19 – Windows will tell you that the computer needs to be restarted.
Click “Yes”

20 – Windows will load.
Login.
The Display Driver is now configured.

Service Pack Installation

I have included an Unofficial Service Pack which a third party has been put together.

1 – Make sure you are loaded into Windows 95.

2 – Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Choose disk image…”

Select the Service Pack disk image.
Click “Open”

3 – Open “My Computer”
Open “Service pac (D:)”

4 – Open “Windows 95 SP1.05 (Unofficial)”
Click “Yes”

5 – The service pack will extract the necessary files.
What you install from this is entirely optional.
For this purpose, I will just installed the Main Updates.
Click “OK”

6 – The selected updates will be installed.
This might take a couple of minutes.
You will be notified once installation has completed.
Click “OK”

7 – You will be told that the computer needs restarting.
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Click “Yes”

8 – The Virtual Machine will restart.
Login to Windows.
Windows 95 Service Pack 1.05 (Unofficial) is now installed.

Web Browser Installation

I have included a number of different Web Browsers which you can install.

1 – Make sure you are in Windows 95

2 – Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Choose disk image…”

Select the Browsers disk image.
Click “Open”

3 – Open “My Computer”
Open “Browsers (G:)”
Install the browser(s) of your choice.

Once installed;
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Note: To update Internet Explorer, copy and paste the “Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2” file to the desktop. Then run the application and it will extract the files and create a folder on your desktop called “IE 5.5 SP2 Full”.
Within this folder, launch “ie5setup.exe” to start the installation.
After installing Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2, you will need to restart the Virtual Machine.
