Windows ME

This guide will show you how to install Windows ME in VirtualBox.

01 – Click New in VirtualBox

02 – Provide a name, and ensure that Type: Microsoft Windows and Version: Windows ME
Click Next

03 – Leave the RAM setting as is.
Click Next

04 – Make sure Create a virtual hard disk now is selected.
Click Create

05 – Make sure VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) is selected.
Click Next

06 – Make sure Dynamically allocated is selected
Click Next

07 – If required, change the location the virtual hard disk should be saved.
Click Create

08 – Select the newly created virtual machine and press Ctrl + S to open the machines settings.

Select Storage in the left hand column, and then select Empty under Controller: Floppy then click the small disk icon on the right hand side and click “Choose virtual Floppy Disk File”
Navigate to, and select the “Windows ME Bootdisk” image.
Click Open
Select Empty under Controller: IDE.
Then click the small disk icon on the right hand side and click Choose Virtual Optical Disk File.
Navigate to, and select the Windows ME disk image.
Click Open

09 – Click “OK” to close the settings.

10 – Click Start

11 – The “Microsoft Windows millennium Startup Menu” will appear.
Select “Start computer with CD-ROM support.”
Press Enter

12 – The CD drivers will be loaded and you will end up at the Command Prompt.
Type “fdisk”
Press Enter

13 – You will be asked if you wish to enable large disk support.
Leave it set to “Y”
Press Enter

14 – On the FDISK Options Screen, make sure “1” is entered.
Press Enter

15 – On the following screen, make sure “1” is entered.
Press Enter

16 – You will be asked whether you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition.
Make sure “Y” is entered.
Press Enter

17 – FDISK will create the partition and inform you that the computer must be restarted.
Press Esc

18 – You will be returned to the Command Prompt.
Click “Machine”
Click “Reset”

19 – The “Microsoft Windows millennium Startup Menu” will appear.
Select “Start computer with CD-ROM support.”
Press Enter

20 – The CD drivers will be loaded and you will end up at the Command Prompt.
Enter “format c:”
Press Enter

21 – You will be asked if you wish to proceed with the format.
Enter “Y”
Press Enter

22 – The drive will be formatted and you will be asked to enter a volume label.
Press Enter

23 – You will be returned to the Command Prompt.
Enter “E:” (or whatever letter is assigned to the CD-ROM – You will have been informed of this after booting from the Boot Disk).
Press Enter
Enter “setup”
Press Enter

24 – Setup will inform you that it is going to perform a routine check.
Press Enter

25 – Microsoft ScanDisk will check the system.
Select “Exit”
Press “Enter”

26 – Windows Millennium Setup will prepare and launch.
Click “Next”

27 – The License Agreement screen will load.
Select “I accept the Agreement”
Click “Next”

28 – Enter the Windows Millennium product key.
Click “Next”

29 – Setup will ask where you want to install Windows.
Click “Next”

30 – Setup will run a quick check.
You will then be asked what kind of setup you would like.
Click “Next”

31 – You will be asked to enter User Information.
Enter your name.
Click “Next”

32 – Make sure “Install the most common components (Recommended)” is selected.
Click “Next”

33 – You will have the opportunity to enter Network Identification.
You can leave this as-is.
Click “Next”

34 – Select your Country/Region.
Click “Next”

35 – Select your Time Zone.
Click “Next”

36 – Windows Setup will ask you to label and insert a Disk.
It is attempting to create a startup disk which is unnecessary.
Click “Cancel”

37 – Windows Setup will ask you to remove the disk.
Click “Devices”
Click “Floppy Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Click “OK”

38 – Windows Setup will inform you that it is ready to begin copying files.
Click “Finish”

39 – Windows Setup will start copying files.

40 – Windows Setup will inform you that it is now ready to restart the computer and to remove all disks from floppy disk drives.
As there is no floppy disk image mounted, ignore this.
Click “OK”

41 – Setup will tell you that it needs to restart the computer. It will then restart automatically (or click “Restart Now” to restart immediately.)

42 – The virtual machine will then reset and WIndows Millennium setup will load.
It will automatically setup some hardware.

43 – Setup will then inform you that the computer needs to restart.
It will then restart automatically (or click “Restart Now” to restart immediately.)

44 – Windows Millennium setup will then load.
It will automatically run through some tasks.

45 – Setup will tell you that it needs to restart the computer. It will then restart automatically (or click “Restart Now” to restart immediately.)

46 – Windows Millennium will then load and take you to the Login screen.
You can leave the password field empty.
Click “OK”

47 – Setup will update some settings.
Then you will be taken to the Windows Millennium Desktop.

Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Windows Millennium is now installed.

Optional
Below are the steps needed to setup;

  • Display Installation
  • Service Pack Installation
  • Web Browser Installation

Display Installation

1 – Boot into Windows ME

2 – Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Choose disk image…”

Select the Display Driver disk image.
Click “Open”

3 – Right click “My Computer”
Click “Properties”
Select the “Device Manager” tab.

4 – Expand the “Display adapters” item.
Select “Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)”
Click “Properties”

5 – Select the “Driver” tab
Click “Update Driver…”

6 – The Update Device Driver Wizard will launch.
Make sure “Automatic search for a better driver (Recommended)”
Click “Next”

7 – Update Device Driver Wizard will search various locations.
You should be presented with a list of 4 options.
Keep the top item selected.
Click “OK”

8 – Update Device Driver Wizard will inform you that the driver is installed.
Click “Finish”

9 – You will be informed that the computer needs to be restarted.
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Click “Yes”

10 – Windows 98 will load.
Login. you should notice the wallpaper colour has changed.

Right click on the Desktop background
Click “Properties”

11 – Select the Settings tab.
Here you can change the Colour depth and resolution.
Under “Color palette” Select “True Color (32 bit)”
You will find that the performance of a Windows Virtual Machine will be much improved when the operating system is running in a 32-bit colour depth.
Change the resolution if you wish.
Click “OK”

12 – You will be asked whether to restart the computer with the new settings, or to apply the new settings without restarting.

Select “Apply the new color settings without restarting?”
Click “OK”

13 – If you have changed the resolution, Windows will inform you that it will now resize the desktop.
Click “OK”

14 – Windows will ask if you would like to keep the new settings.
Click “Yes”

15 – The Display Driver is now configured.

Service Pack Installation

I have included an Unofficial Service Pack which a third party has been put together.

1 – Make sure you are loaded into Windows ME.

2 – Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Choose disk image…”

Select the Service Pack disk image.
Click “Open”

3 – Open “My Computer”
Open “SERVICE PACK (D:)”

4 – Open “Windows ME SP1 (Unofficial)”
Click “Yes”

5 – You will be asked which components you would like to install.
For this case, I will just be installing “Main Updates”.
Click “OK”

6 – The Service Pack Setup will copy the necessary files.
You will be informed that Installation is now complete.
Click “OK”
You will be told that the computer must be restarted.
Click “Yes”

7 – The Virtual Machine will restart.
Windows ME will load.
Login to Windows ME
Some settings will be updated.

Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”

Windows ME Service Pack 1 (Unofficial) is now installed.

Web Browser Installation

I have included a number of different Web Browsers which you can install.

1 – Make sure you are in Windows ME

2 – Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Choose disk image…”

Select the Browsers disk image.
Click “Open”

3 – Open “My Computer”
Open “Browsers (G:)”
Install the browser(s) of your choice.

Once installed;
Click “Devices”
Click “Optical Drives”
Click “Remove disk from virtual drive”
